A provocation is an invitation to play, to tinker, to wonder and ask questions while engaging with the materials at hand. The presentation of materials are designed and presented in a way which invites the child into the activity to engage in open-ended learning and play. Provocations are an integral component of the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education. Together we will explore the benefits of provocations using loose parts as well as different ways to set up a loose parts activity for mixed age groups.
This workshop will answer the following questions:
• What are provocations and loose parts?
• How do they encourage learning and creativity?
• How can materials (both new and familiar) be presented in a way that sparks curiosity and creativity?
• What materials can I use in my program and how can I build on familiar activities to scaffold a child’s learning?
