This online course will harness current events to deepen understanding of immigration across American history, from the founding of the nation through today. Immigration has a strong appeal for its power to help students to connect their experiences and communities to the core curriculum. The topic also captures students' desire to explore issues of social justice.
Participants will:
- Gain an overview knowledge of US immigrant history, and focus on a particular topic of interest
- Consider interdisciplinary connections related to immigration, from the narrative arc of the immigrant journey to the statistical representation of population change.
- Be guided in the use of primary sources to teach students to pursue answers to questions of “how do we know?” and “what did they think then?”
- Develop a lesson that will engage ALL students – with particular attention to Multilingual Learners, students of color, urban and rural youth, and students with disrupted educational experiences.
- Integrate primary sources into inquiry-based curriculum for use in their own curriculum.
