Gov. Charlie Baker gave the commencement address in a state-wide virtual ceremony for all 668 public and private high schools in Massachusetts on Tuesday night.
The virtual ceremony was designed to celebrate and encourage high school graduates as most traditional commencement ceremonies at individual schools have been postponed, canceled or turned into virtual events due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Baker was joined by a number of celebrities with ties to Massachusetts, including Jason and Devin McCourty of the New England Patriots, singer Rachel Platten, actress Jenny Slate and actor Steve Carell.
He reminds students that although coronavirus is here now, and it’ll be a story they can tell for the rest of their lives, it won’t be here forever.
“But it does not and it should not define your future,” Baker said. “Make good choices, strive to be great, put in the work and appreciate the people who will help you become your very best self. That’s what will last.”
