SHELBURNE FALLS — The second-grade classroom hummed with chatter as students dressed appropriately in pajamas huddled in tents to read Dr. Seuss’ “Sleep Book.”
“It’s really fun,” second-grader Brody Cole said from inside a tent. Brody especially liked wearing pyjamas to class – though he admitted may have done so before, on days when he is running late for school.
It’s “literacy spirit week” at Buckland-Shelburne Elementary, with each day themed as a different Dr. Seuss book. Second-grade teacher Amy Kelley introduced literacy week three years ago, as part of the national event to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday, “Read Across America,” and has organized it for the whole school since.
Kelley decided to set up tents for her students to use Tuesday, sourcing tents from staff members and constructing them Monday night with her husband, she said.
“I want them reading … what better, engaging, fun way to read?”
